the flamingos in Mumbai ...

Threats to flamingos

Flamingos are often so gregarious, usually seen in thousands, that one is quite likely to think that flamingos are safe and face no problems. Nothing could be further from the truth. Firstly, the kind of wetland habitats that flamingos live in are usually under tremendous pressure due to endless developmental demands. Also, quite often such habitats are perceived as worthless wastelands by many people. Secondly, such wetland habitats are extremely fragile and highly vulnerable to threats of various forms of pollution from the surrounding lands due to human activities. They also face the threat of fragmentation due to developmental demands and this could completely undermine the ability of such habitats to contain sizeable populations of any form of wildlife. In actuality, therefore, flamingo populations always face the danger of rapid decline. Food, and protection are the principal factors influencing the capability of flamingos to survive in such enormous numbers. Moreover, such congregations are few and far between. Any minor change in the natural (and other) processes that make these habitats so nutrient-rich and hence attractive to enormous congregations of waterbirds, could completely devastate the habitat’s ecology.
